The pediatric geriatrics specialty

While seeing a poster for a local pediatrics conference, i noticed the abandance of pediatrics specialties.

An  idea jumped into my mind:
Is there a pediatric geriatrics specialty?

The answer is YES.

  • Actually there's a sector of the pediatrics patients that needs the "pediatrics geriatrics specialty" the long term care cases that suffer from complications and gaaaaaps of care as: cerebral palsy, myopathies, cystic fibrosis, Advanced Trisomy 21, Dementia in pediatric age group as Faber disease & Lafora disease, Fragility fractures in pediatrics, hemodialysis children, heart failure children and other neurodegenerative disorders of pediatrics.

Anyone that has worked in an official home healthcare or long term care unit would have provided care to several cases from those categories. Their  families are always appreciating for the "comprehensive *_GERIATRICS_* approach" as: the relief the caregivers stress; improve quality of life; is patient centered (look for the patient and not for the numbers in charts or labs); deprescribe rather than polypharmacy; start low and go slow; multidisciplinary team approach; realistic & flexible rather than stiffness & tube-vision in some non-geriatricized guidelines; use a non-polyinvestigation approach; hate unnecessary pipes (as catheters and cannulas); and finally the geriatrics specialty don't lubricate those case and don't avoid taking care of them or feel shameful.

I LOVE GERIATRICS. 🌸🌺
